How does SLS 3D printing work?
SLS works by spreading a thin layer of powder material, such as nylon or other thermoplastics, onto a build plate. A high-powered laser scans and melts the powder in specific locations according to the digital design, sintering the powder particles together to form a solid layer. After completing a layer, the printer applies a new layer of powder and repeats the process. The unused powder remains in place and acts as a support for the model, eliminating the need for additional structures. This process continues until the entire object is formed.
Best Applications for SLS 3D Printing
SLS 3D printing is ideal for the production of functional prototypes, complex parts, and small to medium production runs. It is commonly used in the automotive, aerospace, and medical device industries due to the high strength and durability of the printed parts. SLS is also particularly suitable for making parts with complex geometries and integrated moving parts, as it does not require support structures and thus offers greater design freedom.
